Back from a trip with a wallet full of foreign notes? Here are your main options and how to choose between them.
Option 1: Sell them back to yen
If you have no plans to revisit, converting back to yen is the rational move — rates drift over time, and notes sleeping in a drawer can lose value. We happily buy back small amounts and mixed currencies.
Currencies like the Vietnamese Dong and Indonesian Rupiah are hard to exchange outside their home countries, so visiting us soon after returning is wise.
Option 2: Keep them for the next trip
Planning a return? Holding on to the cash is perfectly sensible — especially widely-used currencies like the US Dollar and Euro. Store notes flat and clean; damaged notes can be refused abroad.
Note: coins cannot be exchanged
Exchange shops in Japan, ours included, handle banknotes only. Spend coins at the airport or convenience stores before you fly home, or use them for tips.
How buy-back works
Just bring your foreign banknotes to the shop — we exchange them at the day's buy rate, published daily on this site. For older note series, handling depends on type and condition; ask us via the contact form or by phone if unsure.
