About the British Pound

The Pound Sterling is one of the world's oldest currencies. Current banknotes are £5, £10, £20 and £50, all printed on durable polymer. The older paper notes have been withdrawn from circulation, so check any notes you have kept from past trips.

Banks in Scotland and Northern Ireland issue their own pound notes; shops in England sometimes decline them. For a London-centered trip, Bank of England notes are the safe choice. The UK is highly cashless, but cash still helps at markets, for tips and at small kiosks.

Tips for Exchanging Pounds

Paper notes are withdrawn

Old paper £20 and £50 notes are no longer accepted in shops. We supply current polymer notes; ask us about old ones.

Cards first, cash as backup

Contactless payment is everywhere in the UK. Carry a modest amount of cash in £10 and £20 notes for markets and tips.

Mind Scottish notes

Scottish-issued notes can be refused in London. We check the issuing bank when buying back — feel free to bring them in.
