About the Philippine Peso
Current banknotes are 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 pesos (the New Generation Currency series), with a polymer 1,000-peso note also in circulation. The older New Design Series has been demonetized — check any notes left from past trips.
Jeepneys, tricycles, markets and food stalls run on cash, and small 20 and 50 peso notes do the heavy lifting. Large notes are often unwelcome because vendors lack change, so carry an easy-to-break mix.
Tips for Exchanging Pesos
Go heavy on small notes
Notes of 100 pesos or less rule jeepneys and stalls. Plenty of 20s and 50s make daily life easier.
Old-series notes are void
New Design Series notes are demonetized and no longer usable. Ask us if you are unsure what you have.
Cash is king outside the cities
Cards work in central Cebu, but island tours and rural areas have few ATMs. Bring enough cash for your stay.
