About the Malaysian Ringgit

Ringgit banknotes come in RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20, RM50 and RM100 (RM20 circulates less). The RM1 and RM5 are polymer, and the clear color coding makes the notes easy to tell apart.

Malaysia is affordable — a hawker meal starts around RM10. Cards and Touch 'n Go e-wallets are common in the cities, but hawker stalls, night markets and local eateries run on cash. RM1, RM5 and RM10 notes do the daily work.

Tips for Exchanging Ringgit

Small notes rule the stalls

Even RM50 can be hard to break at markets. Carry plenty of RM1, RM5 and RM10 notes.

Cards in the city

KL malls and ride-hailing apps take cards. Reserve cash for hawkers, markets and tips.

Long stay? Start small

Malaysia is a popular long-stay destination. Exchange your first weeks' living costs and rely on local banking after that.
