About the Korean Won
Korean banknotes come in 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 50,000 won, with the 50,000-won note doing most of the work. The large numbers take getting used to — thinking "10,000 won ≈ a little over 1,000 yen" makes shopping easier.
Korea is one of the most card-centric societies anywhere; outside street stalls and markets, credit cards cover almost everything. A T-money card handles subways and buses. Keep cash for market food stalls and street vendors, which are often cash-only.
Tips for Exchanging Won
Get a feel for the zeros
Remember: 10,000 won is roughly 1,000 yen. Pause and count the zeros before paying until it feels natural.
Cash is for markets and stalls
Street food at Myeongdong or Gwangjang Market is cash-only territory. Carry plenty of 1,000 and 5,000 won notes.
Convert leftover won early
