About the Chinese Yuan
Chinese banknotes come in 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 yuan. With the largest note worth only around 2,000 yen, larger sums mean a thicker stack of notes.
Mobile payment (WeChat Pay, Alipay) dominates daily life in China, and cash use is shrinking in the cities. For foreign visitors, though, cash remains essential insurance in case mobile payment setup fails — taxis, small eateries and tourist-site kiosks still take cash reliably.
Tips for Exchanging Yuan
Mobile pay plus cash backup
Register your card with WeChat Pay or Alipay beforehand, and carry cash for the moments it fails. That combination is today's standard for China travel.
Break your 100-yuan notes early
Small shops prefer 50 yuan or less. Breaking large notes at convenience stores keeps payments smooth.
Note condition matters
Damaged notes can be refused in China. We hand over notes in good condition, so exchange with confidence.
