About the Hong Kong Dollar
Hong Kong banknotes are unusual: three commercial banks — HSBC, Standard Chartered and Bank of China — each issue their own designs of the same denominations (all equally valid), plus a government-issued $10 note. Denominations are $10, $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1,000.
The Octopus card covers transit, convenience stores and much of dining. Cash still matters at cha chaan tengs (local diners), markets and minibuses. $1,000 notes are often unwelcome, so carry mainly $100 and below.
Tips for Exchanging Hong Kong Dollars
Different designs, same value
Three banks issue the same denominations in different designs — not counterfeits, just different issuers. All are valid.
Keep it to $100 and below
$500 and $1,000 notes can be refused at small shops. A $20/$100 mix keeps daily payments easy.
Macau uses the pataca
HKD is widely accepted in Macau at par, but change may come in patacas. We handle Hong Kong dollars only.
