About the Taiwan Dollar
Taiwan Dollar notes exist in 100, 200, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 — but in practice you will only see 100s, 500s and 1,000s; the 200 and 2,000 rarely circulate. Thinking "1 TWD ≈ 5 yen" makes prices easy to read.
Night markets are the heart of Taiwan travel, and stalls at Shilin or Raohe run on cash with items costing 50–100 TWD. An EasyCard covers the MRT and convenience stores, while stalls, taxis and local eateries call for cash.
Tips for Exchanging Taiwan Dollars
Stack 100s for the night market
Stall payments run 50–100 TWD and 1,000 notes are hard to break. A thick stack of 100s is night-market gold.
EasyCard plus cash
EasyCard for MRT, buses and convenience stores; cash for stalls and eateries. That combo is the Taipei standard.
Convert leftovers promptly
Rates move daily. If no return trip is planned, bring leftover dollars back early — small amounts welcome.
