About the Vietnamese Dong

The dong is famous for its zeros. Main polymer notes are 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 100,000, 200,000 and 500,000 dong. Keeping "10,000 dong ≈ 60 yen" in mind and counting zeros calmly is the key skill.

Watch the 20,000 and 500,000 notes in particular — both are bluish and easy to confuse despite a 25x difference in value. Vietnam still runs largely on cash at markets, stalls and taxis, so a good supply of small notes makes the trip smoother.

Tips for Exchanging Dong

The 20,000 / 500,000 trap

These two blue notes are the classic mix-up. Count the zeros before handing money over.

Quick mental math

Drop three zeros and multiply by 60 to get yen: 100,000 dong → 100 × 60 = about 600 yen.

Small notes save the day

Stalls and moto-taxis often lack change. Carry plenty of 10,000 and 20,000 dong notes.
